4 Great Fruits to Eat for Weight Loss

By |December 8th, 2016|

“Eat your fruits and vegetables!” You probably heard that from your parents all the time growing up. You may even say it to your kids now. Unlike a lot of things parents tell their kids (hello Santa Claus!) though, this one is backed up by fact. The World Health Organization has found that eating 400 grams (five 80-gram portions) of fruits and vegetables each day will help to lower the risk of serious health problems. Certain fruits will also help with weight loss. Here are a few of them.
Apples for Weight Loss

Speaking of things parents say to kids, you’ve probably heard an apple a day can keep the doctor away. But it can keep the weight away too. A study published in the Nutrition Journal found that eating an apple or a pear before a meal led to substantial weight loss for the people in the study. The report also found that eating apples can help reduce the risk of diabetes, which will be very helpful if you’re already substantially overweight.
Watermelon for Weight Loss

Watermelons are over 90 per cent water. This means it’s an amazing fruit to eat if you’re trying to lose weight, as most of the mass will just pass through you. A 100 gram portion of watermelon also contains just 30 calories, meaning if you have five 80 gram portions of it, as the WHO recommends, you’d be consuming just 120 calories per day. Watermelon is also objectively delicious!
Bananas for Weight Loss

Try to have one banana a day, ideally as your post-workout meal. Bananas have just over 100 calories, so they’re light on the body. But they are heavy on benefits. Medical Daily wrote that “bananas are healthier than most [...]

Weight loss surgery may save your life

By |November 24th, 2016|

The wide selection of treatments we offer at Hairfree Laser Clinics can help make your life better, no doubt about it. But, evidence is increasingly showing that weight loss surgery, which we offer, can actually save your life.
Surgery Can Be a Life Saver
A new study released at The American Heart Association (AHA) conference in New Orleans claims that weight loss surgeries can significantly reduce the risk of heart failure for people struggling with obesity.

The senior author of the study, Dr. Johan Sundstrom, says, “Our study shows an association between obesity and heart failure, and offers support for efforts to prevent and treat obesity aggressively, including the use of bariatric surgery.”

The study focused on nearly 26,000 obese people who had weight loss surgeries. It compared them to almost 14,000 obese people who tried to lose weight solely through traditional means. According to WebMD, “Four years after the start of treatment, the weight-loss surgery group had lost more weight, had a nearly 50 percent lower risk of heart failure, and had lower rates of heart rhythm problems, diabetes and high blood pressure than the lifestyle-changes group.”

So, dieting and exercise are extremely important steps to take in order to live a healthier life. But if you fall within the obese range, you should take the next step with us to ensure you get there quicker.
Surgery Helps Women Even More
Another recent report brings even more good news for us all: women may get even more benefits from weight loss surgery.

The study, put together by Dr. John Morton, director of bariatric surgery at Stanford Health Care, found that all patients who have weight loss surgeries see a considerable drop on the scale. However, women have [...]

Fasting: A Good Way to Lose Weight Fast

By |November 14th, 2016|

We’ve talked a lot over the last few weeks about different weight loss tips, some of which work, others of which are scams. We think it’s a good idea to lead you away from tactics that could waste your time instead of shrinking your waist, but we also think it’s important to give good ideas on what you can do. So, here’s one: you can lose weight fast with fasting.
What is intermittent fasting?
Intermittent fasting is a strategy where over the course of a week you will refrain from eating food for an allotted period multiple times. For example, one practitioner of intermittent fasting says he avoids meals for over 12 hours, three times a week. The strategy was first presented by Dr. Krista Varady in 2004 at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
How does fasting work?
The premise is simple. Your body doesn’t need food as often as you give it food. So, your body can healthily deal with abstaining from food for periods of time. Taking this time off food results in weight loss of non-water fats, according to Varady, with some saying 24 hours of fasting can equal half a pound of weight loss.

Ok, taking a day off is easy, but what if you over eat the next day, you may be asking? Well, according to Global News, Varady’s research found that, “In short-term studies, she learned that those who fast for a day don’t binge the next day at all. At most, they’d eat about 10 to 15 per cent more calories once they broke their day-long fasts. Despite a slight increase, the calorie reduction was still enough to see weight loss.”

How effective is fasting?
Well, as we [...]

Running May Not Be the Best Way to Lose Weight

By |November 3rd, 2016|

Exercise is an essential component of losing weight. There’s no way around that. But as we’ve discussed in previous weeks, weight loss requires you to take very specific steps. How you exercise is no exception, as you need to use your time wisely to ensure you’re getting the best workout in the shortest span. On that note, a professor of exercise science recently told the Guardian that running may not be the best form of exercise for weight loss.
Running Can Set Off Alarms In Your Body
Glenn Gaesser, the exercise science professor from Arizona University, says that we can burn about 3,500 calories from 35 miles of running. The problem, though, is that thousands of years of evolutionary development has led our bodies to go into a protection mode when we run, making it harder to burn calories. Protection mode, in this case, means that our bodies reduce our metabolism so that we can delay starvation even if we’re exercising a lot. Think of it as the body fighting to preserve itself from contracting.

Gaesser says, “The human body has a pretty good capability for regulating its bodyweight. We all have a set-point range for our weight and, while the average person may consume three-quarters of a million calories per year, from year to year we weigh pretty much the same thing unless something happens that greatly distorts our lifestyle, such as a purposeful weight-loss diet, or some sort of tragic event that changes our behaviour.”
Running Can Give a False Sense of Accomplishment
Gaessar also says that his studies have shown that some people who take up running actually gain weight. The reason is that they push themselves for the hour that they [...]

Weight loss tea is probably a scam

By |October 27th, 2016|

Detoxify your body. Boost your metabolism. Lose weight. Clean out your system. And all of this just by drinking weight loss tea. All the cool kids on Instagram are either doing it, or getting paid to promote it. But guess what? Most experts think it’s a total scam.
Weight loss tea has little to no benefits
Jessica Cording, a registered dietitian, told SELF that, “At best, they’re a waste of your money, and at worst, they’re dangerous.” Cording said that the teas are a waste of money because they have very little positive effects. Cording says, “Tea does contain compounds such as polyphenols and caffeine, which [may slightly increase] metabolism, but this boost isn’t enough to have a meaningful impact on body weight.” So, basically, you’re paying for something that will have close to zero effect, besides giving you the feeling that you’re being healthy (which is a dangerous feeling that we talked about last week in the context of Fitbits).

But worse than that, the teas may actually cause you harm, according to Cording, because they contain ingredients, like stimulants, that aren’t found in normal teas. These ingredients are very unnatural, and can have a negative effect on your body.
Weight loss tea doesn’t detoxify your body
One reason people feel these teas are having a cleansing effect is that it can make people poop more, which often gets mistaken for a cleanse. In reality, you’ll be running back and forth to the bathroom not because of any sort of ongoing cleansing, but rather because these teas just have a lot of caffeine, as well as other laxatives. You wouldn’t think going to the bathroom 10 times a day because you drink too much [...]

Should You Ditch that Fitbit on Your Weight Loss Journey?

By |October 20th, 2016|

If you’ve been following our blog for a while you’re probably well aware of the fact that weight loss is multi-dimensional. What do you eat? What do you avoid? How much do you sleep? How do you exercise? There are so many different aspects that it can sometimes get confusing, but at the same time it’s important to keep track of everything on your weight loss journey. So, in comes the Fitbit, a device to help keep track of your physical activity and diet. It’s marketed as a way to help make losing weight easier. At a considerable cost. So, is it worth it?
The Fitbit didn’t seem to help

According to a recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association: probably not. The study tracked almost 500 people, between the ages of 18-35, for a six month clinical trial diet, which included prescribed exercise and group therapy regarding weight loss. The study then continued with another 18 months of low monitoring from researchers, where some of the people wore wearable fitness tracking devices, similar to the Fitbit though not that exact type, while others went without and used a website provided by the researchers.

The researchers found, “Devices that monitor and provide feedback on physical activity may not offer an advantage over standard behavioural weight-loss approaches.” This was based on the fact that by the end of the two years, the people who used the website lost, on average, five pounds more than those who used the mobile tracking apps. The people using the website had also lost more weight at the 12 and 18 month points of the trial.
Why didn’t the Fitbit get results?

The researchers weren’t exactly sure why the results [...]

Make These 3 Small Changes For Big Weight Loss Results

By |September 29th, 2016|

Losing weight is a daunting task, no doubt about it. But, like anything else, there are ways to make it seem easier. The main thing we recommend is to break the goal (losing weight) into a series of small and easily achievable tasks. This is smart because it makes it all seem less overwhelming, and finishing each task will give you a morale boost that can help push you further down the road of your weight loss journey. In the spirit of this advice, here are three tiny tweaks to your day-to-day life that you can make in order to get big results.
Eat Dinner Later for Weight Loss

One well-known part of losing weight is altering what, and how much, food you eat. An overlooked angle that is also important, though, is when you eat. It’s important to space your meals out, so that you can maximize the energy each one gives you. If you eat again before you’re genuinely hungry, you’ll end up consuming more calories than needed. Think of it as continuing to fill a glass that isn’t empty until it overflows.

The most important meal in this regard is dinner. Some people eat dinner way too early, and this means that by the evening they’re already hungry again. How often do you have healthy late night snacks? Exactly. Eating early dinner means unhealthy late night snacks that you really don’t need. Adjust your dinner hour a bit, and you can cut these snacks out. This small change will have a huge pay out as the weeks go on.

Have Surgery Now, Keep Weight Off Forever

By |September 2nd, 2016|

Weight loss surgery is effective, plain and simple. We have a bunch of different options you can choose from, and making the right choice means you’ll be headed to the slimmer body you want in no time. Seems too good to be true, right? Wrong.

One of the main concerns we hear from our clients is that they’ll look good after the surgery. But then be back to their old selves within a short period of time. Now, it is true that you need to keep up a good diet, and try to exercise where possible. Surgery isn’t the answer to all of your problems. The results, however, last longer than you may think.
Weight Loss Surgery Gives Long Lasting Results

Weight loss surgeries give significant results, which can last up to ten years, according to a new study from Matt Maciejewski, a professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine.
The study looks at 1,800 people who had gastric bypass surgeries, and then followed their progress from the time of the surgery onward. This group of people was compared to 5,300 people who were considered to be obese, but didn’t have any surgery.

The results were amazing.

One year into the study, those who had surgery had lost 31 percent of their total body mass. Meanwhile, those who went without surgery lost just 1 percent. For a 200 pound woman, this means dropping down to 198 pounds or 138. That’s a huge difference, especially since it only took a year for it to happen!

Ten years into the study, researchers still had access to information on just over 560 of those who had surgeries. Of that number, just 19 had gone back up to their pre-operation size. [...]
